Description
Coming in for a Landing - A Wood Stork and Ibis photo taken in south Florida near the Everglades. An alligator disturbed the birds and the Wood Stork headed for higher ground in the small tree seen in the photo. The Wood Stork looks too big for that small tree to handle but the birds weigh only up to seven pounds.
There is a small and endangered breeding population of Wood Storks in Florida, Georgia and South Carolina but several active rookeries were found in North Carolina in 2005.
Federal Status: Endangered - U.S. Breeding Population (Federal Register, February 28, 1984)
